Changes in Polish legislation for Ukrainians
Poland is preparing legislative changes that may lead to the rollback of the special support regime for Ukrainians introduced in 2022. After March 4, 2026, Ukrainians residing in Poland will receive their status based on general migration procedures, like other foreigners. This draft law stipulates that temporary protection for Ukrainians will not be extended in its current format.
According to the new changes, ensuring the legality of the stay for persons with temporary protection is planned until March 4, 2027. Access to emergency medical care will remain, however, obtaining other medical services may be tied to employment. For parents who wish to receive child benefits of '800+', it will also be necessary to have a job.
Impact of the changes on Ukrainians in Poland
Karolina Haletska noted that after March 4, 2026, all Ukrainians in Poland will be treated like other foreigners. She also emphasized that most refugees have already found employment, their children are attending school, and they have integrated into the Polish environment.
As for changes in payments and healthcare, the details have not yet been published. The draft law needs to undergo interdepartmental coordination, and only after that can we talk about specific changes in legislation.
These changes in Polish legislation may significantly affect Ukrainian refugees who have found shelter in Poland. The introduction of general migration procedures means that Ukrainians will no longer have a special status, which may complicate their integration and access to social services. It is important to keep track of the further evolution of the draft law, as it may impact the economic and social situation in the country, as well as the lives of thousands of Ukrainians residing in Poland.
