Legislative Shifts for Ukrainian Drivers in Poland
Poland is preparing new legal requirements for Ukrainian nationals residing long-term in the country. Specifically, cars brought from Ukraine that have been in Poland for over a year will need to be re-registered with Polish license plates and undergo mandatory periodic technical inspections. The Polish Ministry of Infrastructure is spearheading these changes for vehicles from non-EU nations.
Under the forthcoming regulations, vehicles present in Poland for at least one year will be subject to compulsory re-registration. Previously, the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic shielded Ukrainian drivers from local inspection mandates. However, Ukraine itself abolished mandatory technical inspections for private passenger cars back in 2011. The new Polish rules will now impose these requirements on Ukrainian vehicles that remain in the country for extended periods, a significant policy shift affecting many refugees and migrant workers.
Rising Inspection Costs and Their Impact
Furthermore, starting September 19, 2025, the cost of a technical inspection for a passenger car in Poland will increase from 98 to 149 zloty. The inspection procedure is required annually for vehicles older than five years. Consequently, these new rules could substantially affect Ukrainian drivers using their cars on Polish roads.
The introduction of these legislative changes is likely to have a major impact on Ukrainians living in Poland, obliging them to adapt to new registration and inspection protocols. As many Ukrainians continue to seek work and residence in Poland, staying informed about these changes is crucial, as they will affect daily life and expenses. The higher inspection fee will add to the financial burden for drivers maintaining their vehicles in Poland.
