Protest of Polish farmers against the 'Mercosur' agreement
Polish farmers will hold a nationwide protest against the 'Mercosur' agreement on December 30. The event will take place from 10:00 to 15:00 along the main highways of the country. Farmers express their dissatisfaction with the decline in purchase prices for strawberries, which has become the primary reason for organizing the protest.
Plans of the protesters
The protesters, intending not to block traffic on the roads, plan to use slogans such as:
- STOP Mercosur
- In defense of Polish villages
Krzysztof Olejnik, the protest organizer, emphasized the importance of active actions:
A Polish farmer, a European farmer, is in no way protected from the Mercosur agreement. That is why we are meeting again on the roads to compel the Polish parliament to issue a resolution calling on the Polish government to unequivocally and categorically oppose the Mercosur agreement. Now is the time to act! — Krzysztof Olejnik
Additionally, the protesters announced the resumption of protests at the borders, which will take place on December 10, 2024. The planned strike at the border also involves actions near the 'Medyka-Szeginy' crossing point. Farmers aim to draw attention to their problems and secure support from the state due to the negative consequences of the 'Mercosur' agreement.
The protest of Polish farmers is significant not only for the agricultural sector of the country but also for Poland's economic policy as a whole. The 'Mercosur' agreement, which involves reducing tariffs on imports from South American countries, raises concerns among European farmers due to the risk of lowering prices for local products. It is expected that the protest actions may influence the political discussion in Poland regarding agricultural policy and international agreements, as well as prompt consideration of measures to support local production.
