Return of Ukrainian State Honors

Michał Kamiński, Deputy Speaker of the Polish Senate, has decided to send back two Ukrainian state awards, citing the actions and statements of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The move was prompted in part by the lack of condemnation for those responsible for the Volhynia tragedy and the honoring of the OUN and UPA. The news was first reported by the publication 300Polityka.

Kamiński, who received these honors for authoring the first European Parliament report on Ukraine’s EU membership, stated:

'In light of the actions and statements of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy—supported by all former Ukrainian presidents and the vast majority of Ukraine’s political elite—I have decided to return two state awards of Ukraine.' — Michał Kamiński

He emphasized that Poland and Europe have shown Ukraine unprecedented solidarity, providing hundreds of billions of euros in aid, along with military, political, and humanitarian support. 'A true partnership between nations can only be built on a foundation of truth, respect for the victims, and mutual honesty,' Kamiński added.

Ukraine’s Response and Poland’s Reaction

Additionally, Polish President Andrzej Duda stripped Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. In response, a number of Ukrainian former presidents and diplomats announced they would return their Polish distinctions. President Zelenskyy, through Decree No. 440/2026, awarded the honorary title 'Named after the Heroes of the UPA' to the Special Operations Center 'North'.

Zbigniew Bogucki, Head of the Chancellery of the Polish President, criticized Ukrainian officials for their decision to return Polish state honors. This situation highlights deteriorating relations between Ukraine and Poland, which were previously characterized by close cooperation and mutual support.

The incident underscores growing tension in Ukraine-Poland ties, potentially impacting bilateral cooperation across political and economic spheres. The return of awards and reciprocal criticism show how historical contexts and memories of past events continue to shape modern diplomatic relations. Moving forward, it will be crucial for both nations to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve disputes and preserve their strategic partnership.

The ongoing tension between Ukraine and Poland is further illustrated by recent actions from both sides. Following the return of Ukrainian state honors by Polish Senator Michał Kamiński, President Zelenskyy also made a significant move by sending back his own award from Poland. This reciprocal decision underscores the deepening rift in their diplomatic relations and raises questions about the future of their partnership.
