The Passing of Mircea Lucescu

The world of football suffered a tragic loss on April 7, 2026, with the death of the eminent Romanian player and coach, Mircea Lucescu, at the age of 80. His passing followed a severe health crisis that began on March 29, 2026, when he lost consciousness at the Romanian national team's training camp. Rushed to hospital, he suffered two cardiac arrests the previous Friday. Despite being placed in a medically induced coma on Sunday, doctors were unable to save him.

The Career of Mircea Lucescu

Born in Bucharest on July 29, 1945, Lucescu's playing career began in June 1964 with his debut for Dinamo Bucharest. During his tenure at the club, he secured six league championships and one Romanian Cup, playing his final match for Dinamo on May 16, 1990. He also earned 65 caps for the Romanian national team, scoring 10 goals.

His managerial career started in 1981 with a five-year stint as head coach of the Romanian national team, a role he resumed in August 2024. His most transformative impact, however, was felt in Ukrainian club football. His significant achievements include:

  • A legendary period at Shakhtar Donetsk, where from May 17, 2004, to May 2016, he won the 2003/04 Ukrainian Cup.
  • Leading Shakhtar to eight Ukrainian Premier League titles, six Ukrainian Cups, and seven Ukrainian Super Cups.
  • Guiding Shakhtar to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in the 2010/11 season.

After leaving Shakhtar, Lucescu took charge of Dynamo Kyiv in July 2020, winning the domestic double—the league and cup—in his first season. He departed the club in November 2023. His remarkable career earned him widespread recognition and respect across the global football community. Lucescu is widely regarded as the architect of modern Shakhtar Donetsk, building a dominant team that consistently challenged on the European stage.

“European and world football have lost an outstanding personality whose influence, authority, and legacy will live on for many generations. Mircea Lucescu was one of football's true originals—a man of rare football intelligence, great dignity, and passion, whose contribution to the sport is hard to put into words.”

Aleksander Čeferin, President of UEFA
