Ukrainian poet, dissident Igor Kalynets has passed away

On Saturday, June 28, dissident and poet Igor Kalynets died in Lviv at the age of 85. This was announced by his daughter Dzvenyslava Kalynets-Mamchur on her Facebook page.



Igor Kalynets, a representative of the dissident movement in Ukraine, was born on July 9, 1939, in Khodoriv, Lviv region. He graduated from the philology faculty of Lviv University and worked in the local archive and Vasyl Stefanyk Scientific Library. Kalynets was imprisoned and exiled for his activities during the sixties. After this period, he ceased writing poetry but continued publishing children's books and editing magazines.



“Igor Kalynets is the author of seventeen poetry collections written from the mid-sixties to 1981. After returning from exile, he stopped writing poetry but published children's collections and edited several magazines. He was the laureate of numerous awards and prizes,”


Igor Kalynets will be remembered for his poetic legacy and active engagement in socio-political events. His death is a significant loss for Ukrainian culture and literature. Alongside him, other outstanding figures have also left our world at this time - former mayor of Odesa Ruslan Bodelan and People's Deputy of Ukraine Yuriy Hnatkevych.



A well-known dissident and poet Igor Kalynets, who actively participated in the sixties movement, is remembered for his literary legacy and constant involvement in socio-political events. His death is a great loss for Ukrainian culture.
