Remembering Olena 'Jane' Shargovska: Journalist, Medic, and Tireless Defender of Ukraine Since 2015

Вшанування пам'яті Олени Шаргівської: Журналістка, медик і невтомна захисниця України з 2015 року.

Honoring the Legacy of Olena 'Jane' Shargovska

Olena 'Jane' Shargovska, a dedicated medic, veteran, and journalist, passed away after years of selfless service saving wounded Ukrainian soldiers since 2015. With extensive experience across media roles—including journalism, translation, editing, and social media management—she contributed to television, print media, as well as projects like Ukraїner and Osvitoria.

From 2015 onward, Olena volunteered on the front lines as part of the First Volunteer Medical Hospital named after Mykola Pirogov. Later, she joined the medical battalion 'Hospitallers,' mastering tactical medicine and regularly venturing into the most dangerous combat zones to evacuate the injured. Battalion commander Yana Zinkevych recalled,

“Having mastered tactical medicine, 'Jane' repeatedly risked her life retrieving wounded soldiers from the fiercest battles, pulling them from the brink of death en route to aid stations.”

Championing Women’s Rights in Ukraine’s Armed Forces

Beyond her medical work, Olena was a passionate advocate for women’s equality in the military. In 2016, she co-organized Kyiv’s 'Invisible Battalion March,' demanding that women be allowed access to military positions previously restricted to men. As an active member of the Women’s Veteran Movement, she fought to ensure that female defenders received proper equipment and support.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in early 2022, Olena was in Portugal recovering from an injury and initially unable to return home. Undeterred, she supported Ukraine through volunteer efforts, organizing fundraisers and procuring vehicles for frontline units. On September 10, 2022—her birthday—she officially joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ International Legion, serving in key hotspots including Bakhmut, Toretsk, and the Kharkiv region. Her roles included medical evacuation of the wounded and training soldiers in tactical medicine.

Due to health issues, Olena stepped down from active duty in August 2024 but remained a steadfast supporter of Ukraine’s defenders. Her colleagues at Novynarnia announced her passing, and Bogdan Logvynenko, a military journalist, writer, and founder of Ukraїner, shared heartfelt memories:

“Living in neighboring buildings in Vynohradar, we often gathered in one of our kitchens to discuss editorial matters. You were a tremendous source of strength and a driving force behind many initiatives, always sharp in your views, especially toward the unknown. I reminded you often of your words about those you later became a part of, and we frequently laughed about it.”

Olena 'Jane' Shargovska leaves behind a profound impact on the lives she touched and an enduring place in Ukraine’s history.

Her death marks a significant loss for Ukrainian society, which has witnessed extraordinary bravery in recent years from those fighting for freedom and dignity. Olena’s commitment extended beyond battlefield medicine to advancing women’s rights in the military, highlighting the vital role of civic engagement in national defense and social progress. Her courage and dedication remain a powerful inspiration for future generations striving for justice and equality in Ukraine.

As we reflect on the life of Olena 'Jane' Shargovska, it's important to remember other remarkable individuals who have also shaped Ukraine's history. For instance, the story of Olena Rybalko, the oldest resident of Ukraine, who survived the Holodomor and dedicated her life to aiding insurgents, exemplifies the resilience and bravery that characterize the Ukrainian spirit. Her legacy, much like Jane's, is a testament to the enduring strength of those who fight for their country.
