The Passing of Jacek Magiera
Jacek Magiera, an assistant coach for the Polish national football team, has died at the age of 50. The Polish Football Association's press service confirmed the news. The tragedy occurred on Friday morning when Magiera lost consciousness while out for a run. He was taken to a hospital in Wrocław, where doctors were unfortunately unable to save him.
Jacek Magiera's Career
Magiera joined the Polish national team's coaching staff in July of last year, becoming an assistant to head coach Jan Urban. In this role, he was part of the team for eight matches. Previously, from 2014 to 2024, he worked as a head coach, achieving significant success. This included winning the Polish championship with Warsaw's Legia in the 2016/17 season. Over his career, he was named the best coach of the month in the Polish league on four occasions.
Born in Częstochowa, Magiera made his senior debut in 1991. He played for Legia from 1997 to 2006, winning the Polish championship in the 2001/02 season, as well as the Polish Cup, Super Cup, and League Cup. After retiring as a player, he remained in football, becoming an assistant coach at Legia. He also worked with Legia's reserve and first teams, Zagłębie Sosnowiec, and the Polish U-19 and U-20 national teams. Magiera had two separate spells as head coach of Wrocław's Śląsk.
In March of this year, Poland failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, losing 3-2 to Sweden in the playoff final after defeating Albania in the semi-final. Despite this setback, the team will begin a new UEFA Nations League campaign this autumn. They will compete in League B, Group 4, against Sweden, Romania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their first match is scheduled for September 25th against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Magiera's death is a profound loss for Polish football. He was not only a talented coach but also a figure who made substantial contributions to the sport's development in the country. His success with Legia and the youth national teams pointed to a significant potential in his coaching career. Losing such a specialist as the national team prepares for new challenges raises questions about the squad's future and its performance in upcoming international competitions. His passing is a reminder of the intense pressures and physical demands faced by those in elite-level football.
