Types of Pension Supplements in Ukraine

Ukrainian pensioners can access more than ten distinct categories of additional payments, allowances, and increases to their pensions. Some of these are processed automatically, while others require a formal application. This article breaks down the various supplement types, their eligibility criteria, and the amounts involved.

Main Types of Allowances

  • Age-based bonuses: Pensioners aged 70 receive an extra 300 UAH, those aged 75 get up to 456 UAH, and individuals 80 or older qualify for up to 570 UAH. Importantly, these age-related bonuses are not cumulative. The guaranteed minimum for retirees aged 65 and above who have a full insurance record and are not employed is 4,213 UAH. To qualify for this guaranteed minimum, women must have 30 years of coverage and men 35 years.

  • Care allowance: This amounts to 40% of the subsistence minimum, or 1,038 UAH per month. It is granted to people with Group I disabilities and to lone pensioners. A decision from a medical-social expert commission or a medical consultation commission is required to receive it.

  • Supplement for non-working pensioners supporting dependents: For civilian retirees, this addition is 150 UAH per child. For military retirees, the dependent allowance equals 50% of the subsistence minimum, which comes to 1,297.50 UAH.

  • Allowance for honorary donors: This is set at 10% of the subsistence minimum, or 259 UAH per month. However, as of January 26, 2026, this pension supplement has been discontinued for newly designated honorary donors.

  • Children of war: This category includes individuals who were under 18 years old on September 2, 1945. A 2006 law guaranteed these persons a 30% increase to the minimum pension, currently about 778 UAH. But in 2011, the government reduced this amount to 7% of the subsistence minimum, and since 2015, the payment for children of war has been frozen. Courts are now ordering the Pension Fund of Ukraine to disburse funds covering the last six months.

  • For Chornobyl disaster cleanup workers with disabilities, new minimums were established in March: 20,653 UAH for Group I, 16,522 UAH for Group II, and 12,392 UAH for Group III.

Iryna Polyakova notes: 'The main thing is not to expect the Pension Fund to come to you and calculate everything on its own. Most supplements are still granted based on an application.'

You can verify the accrual of supplements and allowances through the Pension Fund of Ukraine, and it is also possible to choose one of several increases.

Given the economic instability in Ukraine, understanding available pension bonuses and allowances is crucial, as they can significantly affect retirees' financial well-being. The analysis shows that the system of calculating these supplements requires active involvement from pensioners themselves, since not all payments are automatic. This highlights the importance of citizens being aware of their rights and options, as well as the need to keep track of the Pension Fund's actions to ensure they receive the benefits they are entitled to.

In addition to the various pension supplements available, recent updates indicate that military retirees will see increased allowances for dependents. This change underscores the government's commitment to supporting those who have served, reflecting a broader trend in pension policy adjustments aimed at enhancing financial security for specific groups within the retired population.
