Ukraine's Ambassador to Estonia: Forced Return of Men from EU Lacks Legal Grounds

Посол України в Естонії: Вимушене повернення чоловіків з ЄС не має юридичних підстав.

Statement from Ukraine's Ambassador to Estonia

Ukrainian Ambassador to Estonia, Volodymyr Boiechko, has stated that the forced return of Ukrainian men of conscription age from the European Union is impossible without proper legal justification. He stressed that any decisions on this matter must be made at a European level, affirming that Ukrainian citizens legally residing in Estonia or any other EU member state are entitled to protection. This statement addresses recent discussions in some EU countries about potentially returning Ukrainian men to bolster the country's defense forces.

“If a Ukrainian citizen of conscription age is in Estonia or another EU country legally, holds a permanent residence permit, enjoys all legal rights within that EU member state and the corresponding guarantees of protection, then how can he be sent back anywhere?” - noted Volodymyr Boiechko.

He further added that EU countries cannot share information about such individuals or deport them without proper legal grounds. This issue has gained prominence amid recent events and disinformation campaigns observed in the region. Estonian security services have recorded social media activity related to the creation of a so-called 'People's Republic of Narva'.

Estonia Joins Special Tribunal Agreement

Against this backdrop, Estonia has officially joined the agreement on establishing a special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine. This refers to an expanded partial agreement that provides for the creation of a steering committee for the special tribunal. This step underscores Estonia's commitment to justice and supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing war of aggression.

The ambassador's statement is significant in reaffirming the legal protections for Ukrainian citizens abroad during the ongoing conflict. It also highlights the necessity of international cooperation to uphold human rights and legal norms in times of war. Estonia's accession to the special tribunal agreement demonstrates the country's readiness to support Ukraine in its pursuit of justice and accountability for the aggression. These events underscore the importance of European solidarity with Ukraine during this challenging period.

In light of Ambassador Boiechko's remarks, it's important to consider the broader implications of Ukrainian citizens' rights abroad. Recent discussions have also highlighted the responses of Russian citizens in similar circumstances, where some support Ukraine while others remain indifferent.
