Iran Opens Condolence Book in South Africa

The Iranian embassy in South Africa informed its Ukrainian counterpart of the opening of a condolence book following the deaths of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his associates. The response from Ukraine's Ambassador to South Africa, Oleksandr Shcherba, was sharp and unequivocal. He accused Iran's leadership of complicity in the deaths of Ukrainians through its supply of Shahed drones to Russia.

In his statement, Shcherba asserted that

"As military allies of the Russian Federation, Iran's leaders have stained their hands with the blood of thousands of Ukrainian citizens... killed with the notorious Iranian Shahed drones and other military technology your government so willingly supplied to Russia."

Khamenei's Death and Iran's New Leader

U.S. President Donald Trump officially confirmed the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Trump, Khamenei's death resulted from a joint U.S.-Israeli high-tech operation involving 30 bombs dropped on the complex where he was located. The Iranian government declared 40 days of mourning. A black mourning flag was raised over the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.

Iran also selected a new Supreme Leader, 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the slain ayatollah. Ambassador Shcherba added:

"As a person of faith, I try not to rejoice in the death of others... But as someone who lived in Kyiv for three years under the daily wail of Iranian machines of death, I cannot help but wish for every criminal to face justice for their actions. If not before man, then before God."

Shcherba further emphasized that he held no personal animosity toward Iranian government representatives but refused to express sorrow for individuals whose deaths did not evoke grief in him. He noted:

"Mr. Ambassador, I am not acquainted with you and bear you no personal ill will. Sometimes good diplomats must represent bad leaders and their policies. But I hope you understand that I will not express condolences for people whose deaths cause me no sorrow."

This diplomatic exchange underscores the severe strain in Ukraine-Iran relations, which has intensified due to Iran's provision of military drones to Russia for use in the war. The ambassador's reaction reflects the profound trauma caused by these weapons, which have been used extensively against Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure. The death of Ali Khamenei and the succession of his son could influence Iran's future foreign policy, including its stance toward the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its relations with the West.
