Severe Drought from El Niño Fuels Devastating Fires in Borneo
Indonesia’s oldest orangutan research center is now endangered as vast wildfires, driven by the El Niño climate phenomenon, advance dangerously close—within 200 meters—to the Rangkong research station on Borneo. Alongside the Kabang-Panti camp, where scientists have observed wild Bornean orangutans for over three decades, the station faces a growing threat. These fires are forcing orangutans to flee their habitats, while local firefighting efforts struggle to contain the blaze.
Critical Conditions in West Kalimantan
Several areas in West Kalimantan province have experienced months without rainfall, exacerbating the crisis. The fires originated from intentional land-clearing burnings that spiraled out of control due to prolonged heat and drought. This region supports hundreds of Bornean orangutans, with more than 2,500 primates residing within the park as a whole. Notably, orangutans have the slowest reproductive rate among mammals, giving birth roughly once every eight years. Continuous studies have tracked multiple generations of these primates from birth through old age.
At the disaster site, over 40 individuals—including scientific assistants, staff, and local residents—are working around the clock to combat the fires near the Rangkong station. Firebreaks are being created and makeshift irrigation systems installed to saturate the peatlands with water. However, peat can smolder underground for months after surface flames subside. Conservationists are urging the deployment of aerial water drops, warning that isolated patches of greenery may not sustain orangutans, who require large territories and live solitary lives.
According to Indonesian meteorologists, the peak fire season is expected to persist at least until the end of October. This ongoing emergency is raising alarm among researchers and environmentalists alike, who stress that decisive intervention could be crucial to preserving this irreplaceable ecosystem.
