Fire at the Ilsky Oil Refinery
A fire continues to burn at the Ilsky Oil Refinery in Russia's Krasnodar region following a drone attack in the early hours of February 17. By the evening of February 18, the blaze had been contained to an area of 700 square meters and its spread halted. Full extinguishing efforts are ongoing, involving 125 firefighters and 34 pieces of equipment. Official data on the extent of the damage to the facility has not yet been released.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of strikes on Russia's critical energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, the total losses incurred by Russian oil companies from Ukrainian drone attacks on refineries in 2025 are now estimated at over 1 trillion rubles, equivalent to approximately $12.9 billion. This staggering figure underscores the severe impact on Russia's oil industry as the conflict escalates.
Vulnerability of Strategic Assets
The repeated attacks on Russian oil refineries highlight the growing vulnerability of strategic assets during wartime. This vulnerability could lead to further destabilization of the country's economy, particularly in the context of Western sanctions and declining production. As one of the world's leading oil suppliers, disruptions at Russian facilities also have the potential to influence global energy prices, affecting markets far beyond the region of conflict.
