Remembering Diogo Jota
Portugal's national football team has received commemorative wristbands from Prime Minister Luís Montenegro as a tribute to the late player Diogo Jota. The squad has decided to wear these wristbands during their World Cup matches. This memorial gesture will take place ahead of their campaign in Group K of the tournament.
The wristbands honor former teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away last year. Jota and his brother died in a car accident in northwestern Spain in 2025. During his international career, Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal and scored 14 goals. Each wristband is engraved with the names of all current squad members alongside Jota’s name.
Official Meeting and Team Response
The commemorative gift was presented during an official meeting before the team departed for the tournament. Midfielder Vitinha shared details about the wristbands:
“The story behind these bracelets is very simple: when we met with the Prime Minister, he gave them to us.” - Vitinha
He also noted that the manufacturers ensured the wristbands fully comply with FIFA’s strict technical regulations: “They have all the necessary characteristics that allow us to legally wear them on the field during play.”
Vitinha added that the head of government left the decision to the team on whether to wear them at all, and how—whether during the day at camp or directly in matches. “We received this gesture with immense warmth and love and unanimously decided to play with them,” he emphasized. This initiative has become a symbol of remembrance and unity within the Portugal squad ahead of a major tournament.
The gesture reflects the deep respect and lasting memory the Portuguese national team holds for Diogo Jota. Wearing the wristbands during matches symbolizes team unity and their commitment to honoring a former player, which could boost morale during the competition. It also highlights how sports can bring people together and serve as a platform to remember those who have passed while reinforcing collective values. This is a meaningful act that underscores the human side of athletics, even on the global stage.
