A Call for European Union Reform
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has issued a call for the European Union to undergo significant reform, describing Brussels as a 'fading star.' Speaking to the diplomatic corps in Warsaw, Nawrocki criticized current EU policies and stressed that Poland must take a proactive role. He asserted that the nation should lead a bloc of countries demanding changes to the Union's structure and operations. This critique comes at a time of significant internal debate within the EU over its future direction.
Policy Concerns and Diplomatic Initiatives
In his address, the president highlighted specific issues requiring urgent review and adaptation to modern challenges, including the Green Deal, the MERCOSUR trade agreement, and migration policy. Nawrocki emphasized that adequately countering threats from Russia requires boosting the defensive capabilities of all allies and strengthening unity. He added that this crucial effort should not be a subject of 'constant quarrels and malice,' underlining the need for constructive dialogue within the EU.
Furthermore, ahead of the presidential elections, the Polish president signed an eight-point declaration, signaling his intent to invigorate political processes domestically. Planned meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, scheduled for January 26, also point to Poland's active diplomatic efforts on the international stage.

Amid growing security threats in the region, particularly from Russia, Poland's intensified diplomatic activity could become a key factor in shaping new approaches to cooperation among EU member states. It is evident that Poland aims to assume a leading role in advocating for reforms, which may influence the Union's future decisions on critical political matters.
