The Story of Roman Helya
A feature from the Ministry of Internal Affairs' 'Heroes' project highlights the story of border guard Roman Helya. Since February 19, 2022, he has served with the 9th Border Detachment named after the Sich Riflemen. During his service, Roman has fought in the Donetsk and Kharkiv sectors, where he personally eliminated 300 enemy combatants.
Now 23 years old, Roman has completed three rotations in the combat zone. His role as an aerial reconnaissance and strike drone operator has been crucial to his unit's mission success. He plans to remain in the military to pass on his extensive combat experience to new recruits. His dedication and professionalism serve as an example for many young service members.
The Contribution of Young Service Members
Roman Helya's story exemplifies the significant contribution of young military personnel to national defense during the ongoing conflict. His experience and willingness to share knowledge with new soldiers underscore the importance of intergenerational knowledge transfer in the armed forces, which can be a decisive factor in enhancing unit combat effectiveness.
- The importance of intergenerational knowledge transfer
- Strengthening army morale
Such initiatives also help strengthen overall army morale, a key factor given the protracted nature of the fighting. The use of drone technology, as seen in Roman's case, has become a defining feature of modern warfare in the region.
