Ballet Artists' Pay in Ukraine

Kateryna Kukhar, principal ballerina of the Taras Shevchenko National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine, has disclosed the earnings of ballet performers. According to her, the average fee for a ballet artist is around $1,000. However, for a world-renowned principal dancer, that figure can climb to $10,000 per evening.

Kukhar emphasized that a career in ballet is worthwhile because performers can eventually transition into roles like producer, artistic director, or general manager.

“The entire universe is in your hands,”
she said, highlighting the opportunities the profession opens up.

Pensions and Financial Realities

Separately, the case of 69-year-old Ukrainian producer Volodymyr Bebeshko deserves attention. Reports indicate he receives a minimum pension, which was recently increased by 200 hryvnias. Bebeshko currently resides in Poland, a factor that may also influence his financial situation.

This contrast—between high earnings for top ballet stars and modest pensions for industry veterans—shows both the opportunities and challenges facing those in the field. It underscores the importance of financial stability for ballet artists, who may struggle to secure a dignified life despite the lucrative pay of elite performers. At the same time, Bebeshko’s example illustrates how the pension system can affect even well-known cultural figures, highlighting the need for social security reforms for creative professionals. Ultimately, discussions about fees and pensions are central to debates on supporting Ukraine’s cultural sector.

While Kateryna Kukhar highlights the lucrative earnings of top ballet performers, the situation is quite different for those in other areas of the creative industry. For instance, the earnings for voice actors in Ukraine can be surprisingly low, as revealed by actor Khostikoyev. This disparity raises important questions about the financial realities faced by artists across various fields, showcasing the need for broader discussions on compensation and support for cultural professionals in Ukraine.
