Arrest Warrant for Pete Lau
Taiwan's prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, for organizing an illegal scheme to hire Taiwanese specialists. The warrant was issued by the Shilin District Prosecutor's Office in Taiwan.
OnePlus's Illegal Activities
OnePlus established a firm in Hong Kong, which opened a branch in Taiwan in 2015 without the necessary approval from the government. As a result, more than 70 engineers from Taiwan were involved in the company's activities, violating the law. The law requires special permission for companies from mainland China to engage in such activities in Taiwan. In addition to Lau, charges have also been filed against two Taiwanese citizens.
This situation could have serious consequences not only for Pete Lau and OnePlus but also for relations between Taiwan and China. Violations of legislation in the field of hiring foreign specialists may affect the investment climate in the region and the image of Chinese companies seeking to expand their presence in international markets.
It is important to monitor the developments, as this case could set a precedent for other tech companies in the region.
