Russia May Use Provocations Under a False Flag to Undermine NATO Unity

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) warn that Russia may resort to provocations under another flag to destabilize NATO unity and create conditions for new aggression.

ISW notes that such allegations are not new. Previously, Moscow spread similar narratives regarding Poland, Moldova, and Serbia. Analysts consider this a sign of a new coordinated information strategy from the Kremlin.

Russia's statements about possible provocations against the United Kingdom are just part of a broader plan. This scenario may be part of preparations for a potential future conflict.

Increase in Russian Activity in the Western Direction

ISW specialists observe that since the beginning of autumn 2025, Russian activity has increased, including violations of NATO airspace by drones and the buildup of military capabilities in the western direction.

'This organized activity model indicates that Russia has entered the first phase of preparation for a higher level of war, such as a potential armed confrontation with NATO,' the report states.

Additionally, Russia's actions regarding the restructuring of military districts and the establishment of bases on the border with Finland may be aimed at preparing for a potential future conflict.

Preparation for a potential higher-level future conflict regarding Russia and NATO is becoming the subject of analysis by military analysts. Their observations indicate an increase in Russian activity in the western direction, which could have serious implications for the security of the region.
