What the data showed
At 11:30 on August 22, researchers from Panthera and Conservation Science Partners made public a study carried out in Washington state's forests. The findings add to a growing body of evidence that top predators can provide measurable safety benefits to people. When pumas are around, black-tailed deer keep away from highways and developed areas, and fatal vehicle collisions involving deer fall by a striking 76%. The analysis drew on GPS data from 59 collared pumas, images from 503 camera traps, and more than 1,000 collision reports. Deer were 15% less likely to appear near roads and 86% more likely to remain in remote wild thickets.
How deer responded
The deer also changed their daily schedules because pumas do most of their hunting in twilight and after dark. Animals shifted more of their activity to daylight, which could have major implications for their behavior and survival strategies. Across the United States, roughly two million deer-related accidents take place every year, killing up to 440 people and causing about $10 billion in damages. Nighttime collisions are considered the most dangerous because of poor visibility, underscoring why the ecological role of pumas matters.
Mark Elbrock, a co-author of the study, said: "Deer know exactly where the risk of meeting a big predator is highest, so they adjust their paths and schedules to stay safe. Pumas essentially scare them away from roads."
The results may speed up efforts to return pumas to the eastern United States, with potential gains for ecosystems and road safety alike. The research highlights the broader importance of predators: their mere presence can alter how herbivores behave and reduce conflicts with people. Applying similar projects in other regions could improve traffic safety and support conservation of natural habitats, while opening new avenues for examining species interactions amid modern environmental pressures.
