The Spectacular Bloom of the Atacama Desert

In 2026, Chile’s Atacama Desert—known as one of the driest places on Earth—is witnessing an extraordinary natural event. After intense rainfall in August, the desert is undergoing a vast floral bloom accompanied by unusual snowfall, a phenomenon not seen in many years. According to Chile’s National Forest Corporation, this blossoming could cover an area as large as 15,000 square kilometers, driven by the rare combination of sufficient precipitation and cold temperatures.

Climate Factors and Desert Ecosystem

Located in northern Chile, the Atacama stretches over 1,000 kilometers between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. It typically receives an average of only 15 mm of rain annually, with some spots recording as little as 1 to 3 mm per year—and certain zones experiencing drought lasting several years. This extreme dryness results primarily from two factors:

  • The Andes Mountains blocking moist air coming from the east;
  • The cooling effect of the Humboldt Current along the coast, which inhibits rain cloud formation.

However, in August 2026, heavy rainfall struck the region. For instance, the town of Taltal recorded nearly 40 mm of rain over just three days—almost ten times its usual yearly total. These downpours triggered floods and mudslides. Additionally, significant portions of the desert were covered with snow, with NASA satellites capturing snow spreading from the Andes deep into the desert. This unusual weather forced a temporary shutdown of the ALMA astronomical observatory due to heavy snow and strong winds.

The Atacama’s bloom is a remarkable event, as more than 200 flower species can suddenly burst into life in this arid environment. The first flowers are expected to appear in early September 2026, with the peak bloom predicted for late October. The desert is also home to diverse wildlife, including:

  • flamingos;
  • Humboldt penguins;
  • hummingbirds;
  • foxes;
  • viscachas;
  • lizards;
  • and numerous insect species.
