Its existence is puzzling, especially given the absence of nearby active volcanoes that could explain such heat. Scientists believe this unusual warmth stems from a geothermal system fueled by faults in the Earth’s crust. Extensive research conducted across 70 forest sites along the river has revealed intriguing patterns in how these elevated temperatures influence tree diversity.
Findings indicate that for every 1°C increase in average annual temperature, there is an approximate 11% decline in tree species diversity. In the hottest segments of the river, tree species typical of warmer Amazonian regions dominate, causing the composition of forests in these areas to become increasingly similar. This homogenization of tree communities poses significant ecological challenges for the surrounding environment.
The Atacama Desert’s Unusual Bloom Amid Extreme Aridity
