Vladimir Putin’s Backing for Ramzan Kadyrov

During a meeting at the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin threw his support behind Ramzan Kadyrov’s bid for another term as the head of the Chechen Republic. Kadyrov, who has held power in Chechnya for over 19 years, is now gearing up for the 2026 elections, which will mark the start of his fifth official term in that role.

Ramzan Kadyrov’s Career Path

From 2005 to 2007, Ramzan Kadyrov held various government positions in Chechnya, including deputy prime minister and head of the government. His first term as the republic’s leader ran from 2007 to 2011, when he was appointed by the parliament upon Vladimir Putin’s nomination. His second term stretched from 2011 to 2016, again confirmed by the parliament, but this time on the recommendation of Dmitry Medvedev.

During that second term, the title of the position was changed to 'Head of the Chechen Republic' at Kadyrov’s initiative, as he argued that 'the country should have only one president.' Kadyrov’s third term, from 2016 to 2021, came via the first direct elections, where he secured over 97% of the vote. His fourth term, which began in 2021 after he was re-elected in September of that year with a record 99.7% of the vote, will continue until the elections in September 2026.

Vladimir Putin expressed confidence that

“the residents of the republic will support you; much has been accomplished under your leadership, and the region has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years”
— Vladimir Putin.

In response to this endorsement, Ramzan Kadyrov stated:

“I will continue to serve you as a foot soldier and will never let you down”
.

Kadyrov has also received numerous awards for his work. These include a first-class Order 'For Special Contribution to the Development of the Cement Industry of the Russian Federation' and over 30 honors since the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine in 2022. His son, Adam, holds more than 16 medals and orders. In 2019, Kadyrov was diagnosed with pancreatic necrosis, though this information has not been confirmed.

Putin’s support for Kadyrov’s candidacy signals a continuation of the Kremlin’s steady policy toward Chechnya, where Kadyrov plays a key role in ensuring local loyalty and maintaining control over the region. It also underscores that, despite ongoing concerns about human rights and Kadyrov’s governance methods, his position remains strong within Russia’s political system. The 2026 elections could prove to be a pivotal moment for Chechnya’s future development and its integration into Russian politics.

As Kadyrov prepares for his upcoming election campaign, it is essential to consider the broader context of his leadership and its implications for the region. Recent developments indicate that over 71,000 Chechens are actively engaged in military efforts, a situation that highlights the complex dynamics at play.
