Putin justified the shutdown of mobile internet

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the shutdown of mobile internet in some regions of the country is a necessary step to protect against drone raids and strikes. He explained this as a means to ensure security and reduce the risk of potential threats.

Putin noted that limiting access to the internet helps avoid situations where external services could be used by enemies to identify potential targets for attacks. However, he did not specify how this is technically implemented.

Solutions to the problem

In his address, Putin named two possible solutions to the problem of using the internet by opponents for attacks on Russian regions. He suggested transitioning to domestic software and hardware or making agreements with foreign suppliers to relocate their services to Russian territory.

“The first is to switch to domestic software, to our so-called 'hardware'. The second is that we can also use the capabilities of foreign manufacturers who operate here, but we need to negotiate with them to transfer these services to the territory of the Russian Federation”

Restrictions on mobile internet

Currently, problems with mobile internet in St. Petersburg have lasted for the second day. Users of various telecom operators are widely complaining about network disruptions.

In several areas of the Ulyanovsk region, permanent restrictions on mobile internet have also been implemented. Officially, the authorities explain this as a necessity to protect special purpose facilities, but local residents point out that even allowed resources are unavailable.

Bringing mobile internet under control is understood as a precautionary measure to protect the country from potential threats and hostile attacks.
