Peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv at a standstill
Both Moscow and Kyiv have largely lost interest in US-brokered peace negotiations. Russian President Vladimir Putin is now focused on seizing more Ukrainian territory by force and intends to expand his demands once his forces take control of the strategic Donbas region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops have halted Russia's advance and are inflicting increasingly significant damage through drone strikes.
Talks between the two sides effectively stalled back in February after the last round of negotiations with Russia. Moscow concluded that continuing discussions was pointless unless Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky orders his troops to withdraw from Donbas. Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Zelensky must issue such an order for a ceasefire to be possible.
Outlook for peace negotiations
Furthermore, Putin has rejected European mediation offers as well as Ukraine's request for a summit on neutral ground. Russian commanders have convinced Putin that their forces can capture the entire Donbas region by fall. Putin will insist on the transfer of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, which Russia claimed to have annexed in 2022. His broader ambitions extend much further—establishing control over all of Ukraine up to the Dnipro River, Kyiv, and Odesa.
US officials deny ever pressuring Ukraine, but the facts show that Washington has made no progress with Moscow.
“Everything that could be agreed upon has already been agreed upon,” a Ukrainian official noted.A senior German diplomat emphasized that Russia's actions are “clearly at odds with any supposed willingness to negotiate,” pointing out that Moscow still seeks victory on the battlefield while sticking to its maximalist demands.
During a summit with Donald Trump in Alaska last summer, Putin proposed freezing the front line in two regions. However, the current situation indicates he has no intention of stopping there.
“He won't take Zaporizhzhia, he won't take Donbas, he won't take Kherson. But remember—the plan was always to take Kyiv. The task is set and must be accomplished,” a source familiar with the matter told the publication.
As a result, the atmosphere surrounding peace talks remains tense, and the prospects for their resumption look uncertain, with both sides seemingly unwilling to compromise.
With the conflict escalating and no progress in the peace process, the international community faces new challenges. For now, the likelihood of renewed negotiations appears low, as both sides remain entrenched in their positions. This could lead to further escalation of the conflict, with serious consequences not only for Ukraine but for global security as well.
The stagnation in negotiations has led to a growing skepticism regarding the effectiveness of U.S.-mediated discussions. As both sides dig in their heels, Ukraine's faith in American diplomacy continues to wane, raising questions about the future of peace efforts amidst escalating military actions in the region.
