Putin Declines G20 Meeting with Zelensky, Insists on Talks Only in Moscow

Путін відмовився від зустрічі з Зеленським на Г20, наполігши на переговорах виключно в Москві.

Putin Rejects Proposal for G20 Summit Meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned down Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s offer to meet during the upcoming G20 summit in the United States. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who is currently accompanying Putin at the BRICS summit in India, stated that Putin is willing to engage in talks with Zelensky only if they take place in Moscow. According to Peskov, a meeting between the two leaders during the G20 gathering in the US is not feasible.

Uncertainty Surrounding Putin’s Participation at the G20

As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding Putin’s attendance at the December G20 summit. Meanwhile, Zelensky has expressed his willingness to travel to Miami for the forum and engage in dialogue with Putin, provided that the United States invites both leaders to the event. Zelensky emphasized,

“We must come. We need to meet, talk, and make decisions. It’s not about the words I say to him or what he wants to say to me—that doesn’t matter. What matters is the outcome.”

This development highlights the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Russia as well as the complex political environment surrounding major international summits. Putin’s refusal to meet in the US may reflect a preference to avoid public discussions of the conflict, while Zelensky seeks to leverage global platforms to advance Ukraine’s position. Changes on the battlefield could also impact future negotiations, potentially opening new avenues for diplomatic engagement. The stances both leaders take at the G20 will be critical in shaping the future trajectory of the conflict and regional diplomatic relations.

As the diplomatic landscape evolves, Zelensky has stated his conditions for attending the G20 summit in Miami, emphasizing the necessity of Putin's presence for any meaningful dialogue. This adds another layer of complexity to an already tense situation, highlighting the contrasting approaches of the two leaders as they navigate international forums.
