UN Security Council calls emergency meeting: the world increases pressure on Russia

Генеральний секретар ООН закликає до глобальних дій для стримування агресії Москви.

Emergency meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the situation in Ukraine

The UN Security Council is convening an emergency meeting on January 12 regarding the situation in Ukraine. This decision was made in response to massive attacks by Russia on Ukrainian cities, which have caused international outrage. The Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berse, characterized Moscow's actions as

“another barbaric act”
, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned these actions, noting that they resulted in civilian casualties.

International support for Ukraine and economic consequences for Russia

The initiator of the meeting was Latvia with the support of France and the United Kingdom. In the context of increasing pressure on Russia, the UK announced the allocation of 200 million pounds to prepare its military for possible deployment in Ukraine. These actions indicate growing international support for Ukraine and condemnation of Russia's aggression.

Moreover, the economic consequences for Russia are becoming evident. Russian oil companies have cut production by more than 100,000 barrels per day, which is a record decline since mid-2024. From January to November 2025, goods worth 20.9 billion dollars were received by Russia, which is 45% less than in the same period last year. The demand for domestic tourism services in Russia has decreased by about 10%, and the Krasnodar region has lost 15% in tourist flow. In 2024, Anapa welcomed 5.5 million tourists, whereas in 2025 their number dropped to around 2 million.

Thus, the international community continues to take action to counter Russia's aggression, which, in turn, has serious economic consequences for the country.

These events underscore the growing global concern over security in Ukraine and the region in general. In light of the massive attacks by Russia, international organizations and states are taking decisive steps to support Ukraine, which may signal a possible escalation of the conflict. At the same time, the economic difficulties faced by Russia may affect its ability to continue its aggressive policies, creating new conditions for diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
