Council of Europe Delegation Visits Kyiv
A delegation from the Council of Europe, led by Secretary General Alain Berset, visited a thermal power plant (TPP) in Kyiv that was damaged by Russian attacks. The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy showed the delegation the facility and outlined the resources required for its restoration. This visit comes amid a sustained campaign of targeted strikes against Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The destruction of such facilities is a primary tactic in Russia's ongoing invasion, aimed at crippling civilian life during winter.
Before the attacks, this plant provided heating for more than 1000 apartment buildings, schools, kindergartens, hospitals, and other critical social infrastructure sites in the capital. Deputy Energy Minister Valentyna Moskalenko detailed the current needs for the TPP's reconstruction.
International Support for Energy Infrastructure
In addition to the Council of Europe delegation, the damaged TPP was also recently visited by U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Sheldon Whitehouse, highlighting the international focus on the state of Ukraine's energy grid. Restoring this plant is a crucial step toward ensuring stable heating for Kyiv's residents. The visits by international delegations underscore the growing global support for Ukraine as the conflict continues to cause widespread devastation.
Rebuilding energy infrastructure, particularly thermal power plants, is vital for maintaining the city's basic services and stabilizing the national energy situation. International backing is seen as key to securing the necessary funding and technology to repair these critical assets.
