Prostate cancer: statistics and causes

In Ukraine, two-thirds of cancer patients are women, however, men die from cancer more often. This problem is exacerbated by prostate cancer, which has overtaken lung cancer for the first time.

According to Professor Oleg Nikitin, data from the National Cancer Registry shows that 64% of cancer patients are women, while only 36% are men. However, the number of cancer cases between men and women does not differ significantly. The situation is complicated by the fact that men die from cancer more often, especially due to prostate cancer.

'33% of primary patients were diagnosed in a neglected state, essentially at the beginning of the fourth stage of the disease, when it is difficult to provide effective help. This is also confirmed by the fact that every 10th patient died within a year of diagnosis.'

The situation is particularly worrisome in border regions: nearly half of the patients from Chernivtsi region and 40.3% from Zakarpattia region have prostate cancer at late stages.

Experts warn that insufficient preventive work and the lack of screenings contribute to the late detection of cancer diseases. That is why it is important to start screening at the age of 45-50 to diagnose cancer at an early stage.

Increasing public awareness about prostate cancer and timely detection of diseases are key tasks to improve the situation in the fight against cancer.
