Salary Boost for Emergency Responders

Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, has announced a significant increase in financial compensation for rescue personnel. This move has gained urgency following a recent Russian attack that left 15 rescuers from the Poltava region undergoing medical treatment. Two of them, Viktor Kuzmenko and Dmytro Skryl, lost their lives while performing their duties during the aftermath of the strike. The attack underscores the heightened dangers these workers face amid ongoing hostilities.

During a meeting with injured emergency responders, Klymenko reported that two of the victims are in critical condition. 'They are currently receiving all necessary medical care. Psychologists from the State Emergency Service are also working with them to provide support and help them cope with the trauma,' he stated.

The Minister emphasized that Russian forces deliberately targeted the rescuers while they were carrying out their responsibilities.

Legislative Amendments

Raising the salary level for rescue workers is a matter of principle. 'That is why improving their financial compensation is a fundamental issue. It reflects respect for their work and the state's responsibility toward those who save others every day,' Klymenko noted.

Draft law No. 6506-1, prepared for its second reading, proposes amendments to Article 125 of the Civil Protection Code of Ukraine. Under these changes, rescue workers' pay would be set at no less than 10 minimum subsistence levels for able-bodied individuals.

'We count on the full support of parliament when voting on draft law No. 6506-1,' the Minister added.

This initiative highlights the importance of recognizing and supporting the efforts of rescuers who risk their lives for public safety.

The salary increase represents a crucial step in bolstering the professional capacity of emergency responders, especially amid escalating threats to their lives and health. Following the recent tragedy in which two rescuers were killed, the focus on their support and financial reward has become even more pressing. This measure could also enhance the prestige of the profession and attract new specialists to the field, which is vital for ensuring public safety in Ukraine.

The recent increase in compensation for rescue workers comes at a time when the dangers they face are escalating. In fact, 2025 has seen a surge in Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian emergency personnel, highlighting the critical need for enhanced support and recognition of their sacrifices. This context underscores the urgency of legislative measures aimed at improving their financial security.
