Treating Severe Burns: A New Frontier in Patient Recovery

For patients with severe burns, rehabilitation can start even before the main treatment is complete—sometimes while they are still in the operating room. This integrated approach allows doctors and rehabilitation specialists to focus not only on saving a life but also on preserving future mobility, independence, and quality of life, explains Serhii Khuda, a physical therapist and deputy medical director for rehabilitation services at the Okhmatdyt hospital in Lviv.

Khuda serves as an accessibility ambassador for Ukraine’s Ministry of Health and brings 11 years of experience in rehabilitation. His method for treating severe burn patients involves bringing rehabilitation experts into the surgical process from the very beginning. This strategy helps reduce the risk of contractures and mobility limitations, while also allowing certain necessary interventions to be performed during surgery or under anesthesia—sparing the patient additional pain and stress.

A Groundbreaking Model for Recovery

Advancing rehabilitation care is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Health under Ukraine’s National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Space. The project aims to ensure seamless continuity between surgical treatment and rehabilitation, enabling faster recovery and better functional outcomes for patients.

Thanks to this innovative approach, patients receive comprehensive care that significantly boosts their chances of successful recovery after major trauma.

Integrating rehabilitation measures into the treatment of severe burns marks a major step forward in improving the quality of medical services in Ukraine. It not only enhances patients' physical condition but also supports their psychological recovery by reducing treatment-related stress. The successful implementation of such methods could serve as a model for other medical facilities and specialties dealing with severe injuries.

As the focus on rehabilitation in Ukraine intensifies, understanding its critical role in restoring active lives becomes essential. This approach not only enhances recovery from severe burns but also emphasizes the broader implications of rehabilitation practices across various medical fields.
