Rehabilitation in Ukraine: The Key to Restoring Active Lives
Rehabilitation as a Vital Component of Daily Life
According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in preserving human potential, fostering independence, and enabling individuals to return to an active lifestyle. This statement comes from Serhiy Khuda, a physical therapist who serves as Deputy Medical Director for the Development of the Rehabilitation Service at the Okhmatdyt Lviv Hospital and as an Ambassador of Barrier-Free Access for the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation care, Khuda stressed that it is not merely a post-treatment phase but an essential part of restoring a person to a full life.
“Rehabilitation is not about 'after.' It is part of bringing a person back to life. For an adult, it means the opportunity to return to family, work, service, or everyday routines. For a child, it is a chance to return to development, learning, play, and childhood.” - Serhiy Khuda
This highlights that rehabilitation is a key factor in restoring social activity and integrating individuals after injuries, illnesses, or wounds.
Priorities of Ukraine's Ministry of Health
A critical aspect of advancing rehabilitation care is that this area of work is a priority for Ukraine's Ministry of Health. The project 'Development of the Rehabilitation Care System' is being implemented as part of the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Space in Ukraine, an initiative launched by First Lady Olena Zelenska. Khuda emphasized that “when we talk about the country's future, we also talk about whether a person after trauma, illness, or injury can live actively, study, work, be independent, and be included in society. Rehabilitation is exactly about that.”
Overall, the development of rehabilitation care in Ukraine represents a significant step toward ensuring barrier-free access and supporting individuals who need help returning to an active life. Khuda noted that “barrier-free access means being able to walk the path of support without obstacles,” underscoring the importance of creating conditions for all members of society.
Serhiy Khuda's statements highlight the importance of rehabilitation in the context of modern healthcare challenges, particularly amid the growing need to support people who have suffered injuries or illnesses. Rehabilitation care can significantly improve patients' quality of life, enabling them to actively participate in society. This aspect matters not only for those in need of assistance but also for society as a whole, which must be inclusive and responsive to the needs of its members.
