Bonus for Ukraine’s National Football Team
The Ukrainian national football team was promised a two-million-euro bonus from the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) for qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, head coach Serhiy Rebrov never informed the players about this financial incentive. The squad was surprised to learn that the coaching staff had not highlighted the opportunity to earn the money.
Serhiy Rebrov’s Resignation
Amid these developments, Serhiy Rebrov resigned as head coach of the Ukrainian national team. His collaboration with the UAF leadership ended by mutual agreement. Rebrov had been in charge since June 2023, spending nearly three years at the helm. The team lost 3-1 to Sweden in the playoff semifinal of the qualifiers, dashing their hopes of reaching the World Cup in North America (2026).
Despite stepping down, Rebrov will remain with the UAF as a vice president and a member of its executive committee. The UAF has already shortlisted three candidates for the head coach position:
- Myron Markevych
- Igor Jovićević
- Andrea Maldera
UAF President Andriy Shevchenko plans to make a final decision by the end of April.
This situation highlights not only internal management issues within the national team but also how financial factors can affect player motivation. Rebrov’s resignation, a direct result of the team’s poor performance, underscores the critical need for clear communication between the coaching staff and players. The UAF’s next steps in finding a new coach could significantly shape the team’s future, especially given the high expectations for international success.
The recent developments surrounding Rebrov's resignation have raised questions about the internal dynamics of the national team. Shovkovskyi's insights into the reasons behind this decision provide a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the coaching staff and the impact on team morale moving forward.
