Unprecedented Churn in Ukraine's Mobile Sector
March 2026 saw a record number of Ukrainian mobile phone users switching providers while keeping their numbers, with a total of 59,177 transfers recorded. This high level of activity highlights a competitive and dynamic market where consumers are actively shopping for better deals. According to data from the National Commission for State Regulation of Electronic Communications (NCEC), Vodafone and Kyivstar suffered the heaviest customer losses, while lifecell emerged as the clear winner in attracting new subscribers.
Which Operators Gained and Lost Customers
Vodafone led in customer losses, shedding 29,375 subscribers, followed closely by Kyivstar, which lost 21,297. Lifecell also experienced some churn, losing 8,387 customers, while Intertelecom and TriMob lost 87 and 31 numbers respectively. On the flip side, lifecell was the biggest gainer, attracting 38,857 new users for a net gain of 30,470 subscribers. Kyivstar and Vodafone also attracted new customers—12,257 and 7,984 respectively—but these were not enough to offset their losses. TriMob and Intertelecom gained 41 and 38 new users each.
“In March 2026, Ukrainians switched mobile operators en masse while keeping their phone numbers. The regulator (NCEC) recorded a total of 59,177 transfers during this period.”
Operators ranked by the number of customers lost:
- Vodafone
- Kyivstar
- lifecell
- Intertelecom
- TriMob
In terms of customer gains, lifecell leads, followed by Kyivstar, Vodafone, TriMob, and Intertelecom. Only lifecell and TriMob achieved a positive net growth in their subscriber base.
This situation underscores the intensifying competition in Ukraine's mobile services market, where consumers are leveraging number portability to seek more favorable terms. The ability to switch providers easily has become a key feature of the market, empowering customer choice. Lifecell's significant net gain exemplifies a successful strategy for attracting new business, while the substantial losses for Vodafone and Kyivstar suggest these companies may need to reassess their offerings to retain existing customers and win new ones.
This shift in subscriber numbers not only reflects the competitive landscape of Ukraine's mobile market but also raises questions about advertising practices among providers. Recently, the Supreme Court upheld a ruling against lifecell for misleading claims regarding its market leadership, further complicating the dynamics of consumer trust in this evolving sector.
