The spokesman for the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov made a statement regarding the further development of the war, which sparked new discussions. Experts saw signs in his words that Russia has publicly changed its emphasis regarding certain occupied territories. This is reported by “UNIAN” citing Russian media.
Peskov's statement on the war: what he said
Peskov stated that Russia allegedly seeks a “stable peace,” but at the same time does not plan to cease hostilities.
According to him:
“We want stable peace. And stable peace can only happen when we secure our interests”.
He also placed the responsibility for the continuation of the war on Ukraine, stating that hostilities will continue until agreements are reached.
Separately, Peskov mentioned that Russia remains to seize control of part of the Donetsk region to reach its administrative borders.
Russia's claims on territories: what has changed
In his statement, Peskov did not mention the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, which could indicate a change in the Kremlin's public rhetoric.
This led to the assumption:
- Russia's focus is shifting to Donetsk
- Public claims on other regions are not voiced
- The rhetoric may be part of the negotiation process.
At the same time, there were no official statements about abandoning claims to these territories.
Previously, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance also expressed the opinion that the war continues due to control over relatively small territories.
Moreover, it should be noted that Peskov's statements do not always reflect the real decisions of the Kremlin, as the position of the Russian authorities can change quite rapidly.
Let us remind you, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated about Ukraine's readiness to adhere to a ceasefire regime on Easter.
