Roman Balayan Celebrates His 85th Birthday
On April 15, 2023, Roman Balayan, a film director and National Artist of Ukraine, marks his 85th birthday. His creative journey, spanning over half a century, has left a significant mark on Ukrainian cinema. Balayan was born in the village of Nerkin in the autonomous region of the Azerbaijan SSR, and his father died in 1942. He began his career between 1959 and 1961, working as an extra at the Stepanakert Theater. In 1969, he graduated from the film directing faculty of the I. Karpenko-Kary Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts. In Georgia, he holds the status of Honorary Academician of the Nato Vachnadze Academy of Film.

Roman Balayan holds both Armenian and Ukrainian citizenship. He has been married to Natalia since 1966 and has a son, Supren, and a daughter, Karina. His debut film was 'The Romashkin Effect,' released in 1973. One of his most significant works is the film 'Flights in Dreams and in Reality,' which received the USSR State Prize in 1987. It is also worth noting that the film 'Keep Me, My Talisman' won the 'Golden Tulip' at the Istanbul International Film Festival and a 'Golden Prize' in Italy.
Roman Balayan recalls his path to filmmaking in his memoirs: 'In the eighth grade, I suddenly decided I would be an actor. A film actor, no less... I stayed there for a year and a half.'
