Six Ukrainian Regions Plunged into Darkness Following Russian Energy Strikes

Шість областей України пережили масовані енергетичні атаки з боку Росії, залишившись без світла.

Coordinated Assault Targets Ukraine's Power Grid

In a major overnight assault on March 24, Russian forces launched a combined attack using drones and missiles against Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The strikes resulted in significant power outages across six regions. Ukrainian authorities reported impacts from 6 missiles and 27 attack drones at 22 locations, with debris from downed drones falling at 10 other sites. Information regarding three additional missiles is still being verified. This attack is part of a sustained Russian campaign to cripple Ukraine's critical civilian infrastructure, a tactic that has escalated since the winter of 2022.

The strikes caused damage in the Poltava community, where residential buildings and a hotel were hit. Separately, on the night of March 24, a Russian drone struck an apartment building in Zaporizhzhia, killing one person and injuring five others.

Widespread Power Outages Enacted

Ukraine's Ministry of Energy confirmed that 'the enemy has again carried out a massive combined attack on energy infrastructure in several regions, leaving some consumers temporarily without electricity.'

To manage the strain on the national grid, hourly power outage schedules for all consumer categories will be in effect from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on March 24 across most of Ukraine. Additionally, power limitation schedules for industrial consumers will remain active until the end of the day.

These emergency measures are aimed at stabilizing the energy system amidst the ongoing armed aggression.

This latest attack underscores Russia's continued strategy of targeting civilian energy supplies to inflict hardship during the conflict. The Ukrainian government's implementation of rolling blackouts highlights the severe pressure on the power grid and the broader challenges of maintaining essential services in wartime. The disruption to energy supply carries profound implications for the economy and daily life in the affected regions.

The recent surge in attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure is not an isolated incident. This coordinated offensive follows a similar strike that left four regions in darkness just ahead of the anniversary of the invasion.
