Intense Overnight Strike Targets Kyiv and Its Region
In the early hours of September 30, 2023, a large-scale offensive was launched by Russia against Kyiv and its surrounding areas, employing a combination of ballistic missiles and drones. The assault resulted in at least three fatalities, among them a child in Vyshhorod. The attacks began on the evening of September 29 at 6:00 PM and continued into the morning of September 30, severely impacting energy infrastructure, residential buildings, and other critical facilities throughout Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions.
Various advanced weapon systems were deployed in this operation, including:
- "Zircon" and "Onyx" anti-ship missiles launched from Kursk region;
- Iskander-M ballistic missiles and S-400 systems fired from Voronezh and Bryansk regions;
- 188 Shahed attack drones, with 86 being jet-powered;
- Herber drones and 'Parodiya' decoy drones launched from Oryol, Millerovo, Kursk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, as well as occupied Donetsk and Crimea.
The main brunt of the offensive was concentrated on Kyiv Oblast.
By 8:00 AM on September 30, Ukrainian air defense forces had intercepted or neutralized 160 targets, including 5 missiles and 155 drones. Strikes were recorded at 18 different locations, notably within Kyiv city where damage occurred in the Sviatoshynskyi, Podilskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Solomianskyi districts. The capital suffered two fatalities and four injuries.
In Vyshhorod, a private home was destroyed, with emergency responders tragically discovering a child born in 2012 beneath the rubble. Despite rescue efforts, the child could not be saved.
“Rescuers did everything possible to save the child, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful,” stated the State Emergency Service.Additionally, eight garages were destroyed, a residential house and an outbuilding caught fire but the flames were extinguished.
Damage in Bucha district included three private homes, 11 vehicles, and two warehouses, alongside a fire outbreak. Infrastructure across Bucha, Vyshhorod, and Obukhiv districts also suffered significant hits. On the morning of September 30, an enemy drone struck a supermarket in Obukhiv district, causing another fire.
In the Zhytomyr region’s Korosten and Zviahel communities, seven industrial and energy facilities were damaged, and four cars were burned. Kyiv woke under a thick fog caused by lingering smoke and soot from the bombardment. With wind conditions nearly absent, air circulation was minimal. Residents, particularly in Podil, Lukianivka, Shevchenkivskyi, and Borshchahivka districts, are advised to keep windows closed and avoid airing out their homes. Drivers are urged to use fog lights and maintain safe distances on the roads.
This tragic event has deeply affected the community, with Timur Tkachenko expressing heartfelt condolences to the family of the child. The aftermath underscores the ongoing volatility in the region and the urgent need to reinforce security measures.
