Civilian Infrastructure Targeted
In the early hours of February 3, Russian forces launched attacks against civilian infrastructure in the Sumy, Kharkiv, and Kyiv regions, as well as the city of Dnipro. These strikes damaged residential buildings, educational facilities, and critical energy systems. In the Sumy community, two separate strikes hit apartment blocks. One impacted the seventh floor, damaging the heating supply and shattering up to ten windows. Another strike hit the fourth floor of a different building, causing a fire and damaging a balcony and windows. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties in Sumy from these incidents.
The overnight attacks on February 3 targeted the following areas:
- Kyiv
- Kyiv Region
- Dnipro
- Sumy
- Konotop
In Kyiv, Russian troops carried out a mass assault using ballistic missiles and attack drones. Damage was recorded in five districts of the capital, resulting in two civilian injuries. The strikes affected residential buildings, a kindergarten, a gas station, and non-residential structures. These attacks are part of a wider pattern of strikes on Ukraine's energy grid, which has been a consistent target since the full-scale invasion began nearly two years ago.
Due to the massive bombardment of energy infrastructure, thousands of residents in Kharkiv will be left without heating. Damage to the heating system will require draining the coolant from one of the city's largest thermal power plants (TPP). Additionally, communities in the Izyumska and Bakaliiska areas of the Kharkiv region were left without electricity. In Konotop, a children's educational institution, private homes, and other objects were damaged.
Consequences of the Assaults
The attacks across multiple Ukrainian regions demonstrate the ongoing aggression and its severe impact on civilian infrastructure.
Strikes on civilian infrastructure signal an escalation of the conflict and underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to protect the civilian population.
Damage to the energy grid could have serious consequences for heating and electricity supply during the winter months, a critical situation for residents of the affected regions. Amid the ongoing war, a rapid response to such attacks and sustained humanitarian initiatives to aid victims remain essential.
