Talks Scheduled for the United Arab Emirates
A Russian delegation is set to travel to Abu Dhabi for talks in the United Arab Emirates. According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, the group will be led by Igor Kostyukov, head of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). The team includes senior officials from the Russian Ministry of Defense, all of whom have received specific instructions from President Vladimir Putin. This move signals a high-level, security-focused approach to the upcoming discussions.
Bilateral Contacts and Economic Focus
Separate bilateral meetings concerning economic issues are planned in Abu Dhabi. The working group leaders, Kirill Dmitriev of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and U.S. Presidential Special Representative Steve Witkoff, will hold a distinct meeting in the UAE capital. This follows lengthy negotiations in the Kremlin between Putin and U.S. representatives, which included Witkoff, Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, and U.S. General Services Administration Federal Acquisition Service Commissioner Josh Grunebaum.
Those Kremlin talks lasted over 3.5 hours and marked the first official meeting in 2026 between American officials and Putin. The Russian side was represented by Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov and RDIF Director Kirill Dmitriev. The Kremlin meeting underscores the complex, multi-channel nature of current U.S.-Russia engagement, which often occurs outside traditional diplomatic forums.
Russia's participation in the UAE talks highlights Moscow's drive to bolster its international economic ties despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. The meetings in Abu Dhabi could represent a significant step toward improving relations between Russia and the United States and attracting investment into the Russian economy. This may also indicate a willingness from both sides to engage in dialogue, considering the current strained global political climate.
