Ukraine's Water Systems Under Threat

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed intelligence indicating Russia is preparing a multi-month campaign to attack Ukraine's water supply infrastructure. During a meeting with officials from regions already hit by Russian strikes, Zelenskyy stressed the critical need to protect these vital facilities.

"We are aware that the Russians are preparing an operation against water supply systems in the coming months. Every community must take this threat with the utmost seriousness and act with absolute responsibility to protect the relevant facilities," Zelenskyy stated.
This warning comes as Russia has repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure since its full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Focus on Chernihiv Region and Defense Measures

The meeting paid particular attention to the Chernihiv region, where repair work is ongoing after recent assaults. On March 23, Russian forces destroyed a dam on the Siverskyi Donets River near Raihorodok using two aerial bombs. Water reserves in the first and second lift reservoirs are now only sufficient for approximately two weeks, raising serious concerns about supply stability for the affected areas.

President Zelenskyy also instructed government officials and his office staff to collaborate with the military on strengthening air defense, specifically against drone threats in western Ukraine.

"We need to add layers of protection—this is a clear task," he emphasized.

A massive Russian attack on Ukraine on Tuesday, March 24, further underscored the persistent danger to civilian infrastructure and the urgent need for enhanced defensive measures.

  • Western Ukrainian regions, including Vinnytsia, Lviv, Zhytomyr, Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipro, and Ternopil, have received specific recommendations to bolster their protective capabilities.
  • The Ministry of Defense is actively working to establish a new tier of air defense to shield critical national assets from potential strikes.

This development highlights an escalating threat to Ukraine's critical infrastructure amid the ongoing war. Restoring and safeguarding water supply systems is now a top priority, as it directly impacts not only public health and safety but also regional stability. The push for additional air defense measures underscores the severe and complex challenges Ukraine faces from modern, hybrid warfare tactics.

As Ukraine braces for potential attacks on its vital water infrastructure, the recent intelligence from President Zelenskyy highlights an ongoing threat to national security. This situation echoes earlier warnings about the possibility of new Russian strikes on critical infrastructure, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance across the country.
