Ukraine has urged UN member states to strip the aggressor country, the Russian Federation, of its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
It also called for Russia's exclusion from the UN. The statement was published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
'From the perspective of international law, the status of the UN member state and permanent member of the UN Security Council enjoyed by the Russian Federation remains unresolved,' the statement said.
Russia mistakenly believes the issue is settled, referring to the fact that since December 24, 1991, and publicly since December 31, 1991, a plaque with its name appeared in the UN Security Council, they noted.
In reality, according to the UN Charter, there were and still are no legitimate grounds for this.
The words 'Russian Federation' do not appear in the UN Charter, and the country did not undergo the procedures and steps required for membership, as was done, for example, by the Czech Republic and Slovakia after Czechoslovakia ceased to exist, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded.

'Thus, the Russian Federation has never undergone a lawful procedure to gain membership and occupies the place of the USSR in the UN Security Council illegally. From a legal and political point of view, there can only be one conclusion: Russia is usurping the position of the Soviet Union in the UN Security Council,' they stated.
In essence, this was an unprecedented case in UN history, where a country imposed its membership in the UN unilaterally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes.
The actions of Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and as a member of the UN do not align with the principles of peacekeeping and guaranteeing peace, they also remind.
The actions of the Russian Federation are contrary to the notion of 'peacekeeping.'
'Three decades of its illegal presence in the UN have been marked by wars and the seizure of other countries' territories, forceful changes to internationally recognized borders, and attempts to satisfy predatory and neo-imperialist ambitions,' the statement says.
The actions of Russia are not only genocide against the Ukrainian people but also pose a direct threat to international peace and security.
'The Russian Federation regularly commits terrorist acts against Ukrainian citizens and other states. Among such crimes are the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, the terrorist attack near Volnovakha, shelling of residential areas of the Vostochny neighborhood in Mariupol, explosions during a rally for the unity of Ukraine in Kharkiv, explosions in the Kharkiv club 'Stena,' massive missile strikes on critical civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, and other terrorist acts,' they remind.
The geography of the Russian Federation's crimes against international peace and security extends far beyond Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated.
In September, the Russian Federation vetoed a resolution during a UN Security Council meeting that demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian occupation troops from Ukraine.
Last month, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for Russia to pay reparations to Ukraine.
The Russian Federation committed genocide against the Ukrainian people. Russian occupiers caused damage to Ukraine amounting to $600.8 billion.
