UNESCO to Document Damage to Lviv's Historic Center Following Russian Attack

Організація ЮНЕСКО зафіксує наслідки обстрілу історичного центру Львова після агресії Росії.

Lviv Comes Under Attack

On March 24-25, 2024, Russian forces struck the historic city of Lviv, damaging several cultural landmarks. The attack caused significant damage to the National Museum 'Lonsky Prison' and the architectural ensemble of the Bernardine Monastery. Nearly every window of the museum was shattered, forcing its closure on March 25 for technical reasons. The monastery complex, a nationally significant architectural monument located within Lviv's historic area, was also damaged. This area is part of the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection, a designation for sites at particular risk during conflict.

The assault resulted in 27 civilian injuries, with seven people remaining hospitalized as of the morning of March 25. A residential building in Lviv's Sykhiv district was also hit. In response, UNESCO experts are planning a visit to the city to assess the impact on its World Heritage-listed historic center. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already coordinated this mission with UNESCO representatives. This incident highlights the ongoing war's dual threat to human life and to Ukraine's irreplaceable cultural identity.

Comment from Volodymyr Viatrovych

Volodymyr Viatrovych: 'Nearly all the windows here are broken—the same windows that witnessed the crimes of Moscow in the last century. But you cannot shatter memory. We remember those crimes, and we will not forget the ones happening today.'

The attack on Lviv is part of the wider, ongoing aggression in Ukraine, demonstrating not only a military threat but also the profound cultural losses that can have long-term consequences for national heritage. The damage to these historic sites has raised alarm both within Ukraine and internationally. UNESCO's planned documentation effort underscores the growing urgency of protecting cultural heritage in wartime, as such destruction is often intended to erase a people's history and identity.

The recent attack on Lviv not only caused immediate physical damage but also exacerbated concerns about the preservation of the city's cultural heritage. This incident is part of a broader pattern of aggression that threatens UNESCO World Heritage sites across Ukraine.
