Shio III Takes the Patriarchal Throne

Shio III has been elected as the new Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, securing 22 votes out of 39 from the members of the Holy Synod. His enthronement ceremony was held at the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta. This election marks the first leadership change in the Georgian Orthodox Church in nearly half a century, as he succeeds his predecessor Ilia II. The new patriarch is 57 years old, was born in Tbilisi, and his secular name is Elizbar Mujiri.

Education and Career Path

Shio III completed his studies at the Moscow Theological Academy and St. Tikhon's Orthodox University for the Humanities. He also trained at a conservatory, specializing in cello. In 2015, he earned a doctorate in theology. Prior to his election as patriarch, he served as the rector of the Church of St. George the Victorious in Moscow. Critics have pointed out that his friendship with businessman Levan Vasadze and his education in Russia raise concerns about potential pro-Russian leanings.

Following Shio III’s enthronement, Dmitry Olisov, the head of Russia’s interests section at the Swiss Embassy in Georgia, expressed hope for stronger ties between the sister churches of Russia and Georgia, stating:

“I hope that your future patriarchal service will help strengthen the traditionally trusting relations between the sister churches of Russia and Georgia.”

The election of Shio III has sparked debates over possible Moscow influence on the Georgian Orthodox Church and the controversial nature of the new patriarch. Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, also congratulated Shio III, highlighting the significance of his new role in the country’s religious landscape.

The selection of a new patriarch could have far-reaching effects on religious and political dynamics in the region, particularly on Georgia’s relationship with Russia. Amid growing tensions between the two countries, Shio III, as the new leader of the Georgian Orthodox Church, has the opportunity to shape religious policy that may influence national identity and foreign relations. This development will be closely monitored by both local and international observers.

The election of Shio III as the new Catholicos-Patriarch has raised important questions about the future of the Georgian Orthodox Church. As discussions around his connections and potential influence from Moscow continue, it is essential to explore the wider implications of this leadership change.
