South Korea Protests Russian Embassy's 'Victory Will Be Ours' Banner in Seoul

Russian Embassy Banner Incident in South Korea

The Russian Embassy in Seoul has displayed a large banner reading 'Victory Will Be Ours' on the facade of its building in the central Chung-gu district. Measuring approximately 15 meters long and featuring the colors of the Russian tricolor, the banner prompted an official protest from South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which demanded its immediate removal. This provocative display in the capital of a key U.S. ally represents a significant diplomatic provocation.

On February 11, Russian Ambassador to South Korea Georgy Zinoviev, during a briefing, thanked North Korea for its support. The Russian embassy also announced a public event to mark the anniversary of the war's start, scheduled for Wednesday, notifying Seoul police of their plans. Notably, this is the second such event in the last four years, whereas during the first two years of the full-scale invasion, the Russian mission avoided large public gatherings in Seoul.

Deportation of Ukrainian Children and International Reaction

Amid this incident, Ukraine's Defense Ministry Main Intelligence Directorate published data on organizations and individuals involved in the deportation of Ukrainian children. This includes the Russian project 'Cultural Map 4+85,' which has facilitated the transfer of thousands of teenagers from temporarily occupied territories to Russia.

The banner display and planned event have raised concerns within the international community, as they appear to signal Russia's attempts to bolster its presence and influence in the region despite South Korea's objections. Concurrently, the published evidence on child deportations underscores the severe human rights violations stemming from the ongoing war in Ukraine. These developments are likely to impact international relations and the global response to Russia's actions both within Ukraine and beyond its borders.
