In the occupied territories of Ukraine, the Russian authorities implement a policy of appropriating the housing of Ukrainian citizens. In one case in Melitopol, the occupiers illegally seized a residential building that belonged to lawful owners and re-registered it in the name of the Zaporizhia region government.
More than thirty apartment owners, who proved their ownership rights before the occupation, tried to avoid confiscation, but the authorities quickly re-registered the building to themselves and evicted the lawful owners. Similar situations are occurring in other cities, where the Russian authorities transfer housing to their representatives or military personnel.
The seizure of housing in occupied territories is becoming an increasing problem for Ukrainian owners seeking to protect their rights and property amid the conflict with Russia.
