Strike on Energy Infrastructure in Poltava Region
Russian forces launched a second strike while emergency crews were responding to an overnight attack on energy infrastructure in the Poltava region. Two State Emergency Service employees were killed, and the total number of wounded has exceeded 30. The occupiers targeted the area with missiles carrying cluster munitions, causing severe destruction and numerous casualties.
Attack on a Gas Extraction Facility
On the night of May 5, Russian troops attacked a gas extraction facility in the Poltava region. After firefighters began extinguishing the blaze, the enemy struck again, killing four people, including two rescuers. According to a spokesperson for the State Emergency Service, the occupiers executed a combined assault using both missiles and attack drones.
“Preliminary information indicates that after rescuers started putting out the fire at an oil refining facility in the Poltava region, the enemy launched four more missile strikes, two of which carried cluster munitions. Our rescuers and equipment came under this attack,” said Oleksandr Khorunzhyi.
The strikes in the Poltava district caused significant infrastructure damage and widespread gas outages. This nighttime assault ranks among the deadliest the region has seen recently. As of Tuesday morning, four deaths have been confirmed, and the number of wounded has sharply risen to 31. Victims sustained injuries of varying severity and are receiving emergency care at local medical facilities. That same night, the enemy also attacked the Kyiv region, affecting residents of Brovary and Vyshhorod districts.
This incident underscores the grave threat posed by Russian military attacks on critical infrastructure in Ukraine, especially as winter approaches when energy resources become vital. Safety measures and the readiness of rescue services are increasingly critical, as armed forces continue to employ advanced combat technologies, including cluster munitions that cause extensive damage and harm to civilians.
The recent attacks in the Poltava region are part of a broader pattern of assaults on Ukraine's critical infrastructure. This alarming trend has resulted in casualties not only among rescue workers but also in multiple regions across the country.
