Russia Ramps Up Production of ‘Geran’ Drones
According to American analyst Peter Zeihan, Russia has initiated large-scale manufacturing of jet-powered ‘Geran’ drones—formerly known as ‘Shaheds’—and is equipping them with R-60 air-to-air missiles. This capability allows Russia to strike targets across Ukraine despite Kyiv's recent advances in drone technology. Zeihan emphasized that Russia possesses the world’s third-largest defense industrial base, which underpins its ability to develop and deploy such innovations.
Technical Upgrades on the New Drones
These drones, previously designated ‘Shaheds,’ are now produced domestically under the name ‘Geran.’ They have evolved into third- and fourth-generation models with significantly enhanced performance. While early Shaheds cruised at around 160 km/h, the new jet-powered Gerans can reach speeds approaching 640 km/h. Each drone is fitted with an infrared-guided R-60 missile, which is heavy enough that the drone carries no separate warhead.
Zeihan noted that this creates a one-shot scenario: 'Typically, you launch multiple interceptors, and those that miss on the first pass turn around and chase the target. That doesn’t work when your interceptor can’t catch up.'
Moscow’s strategy of mass-producing jet-powered Gerans and arming some with air-to-air missiles presents fresh challenges for Ukraine’s air defense systems. The high speed of these new drones leaves defenders with only a single opportunity to shoot them down. Moreover, Ukraine does not yet have full control of its own airspace, compounding the difficulty. The drones carrying R-60 missiles are specifically designed to hunt aircraft such as the F-16, Gripen, and Rafale.
