The Kh-69 Missile: A Key Component of Russia's Arsenal

Russia's Kh-69 cruise missile has emerged as a significant weapon in its war against Ukraine. First unveiled in August 2022, this missile represents an advancement in Russia's aerial strike capabilities. Its confirmed operational use began in February 2024, with one of its most notable strikes destroying the Trypilska Thermal Power Plant in the Kyiv region in April 2024. This weapon is part of a broader Russian strategy to overwhelm and penetrate Ukrainian air defenses.

Key Characteristics

The Kh-69 possesses several defining features that make it a formidable threat:

  • It can fly at an extremely low altitude of just 20 meters, making detection by air defense radars exceptionally difficult.
  • Its airframe has a square cross-section and incorporates special coatings that drastically reduce its radar signature.
  • The missile can be launched from tactical fighters like the Su-34 or Su-35, providing operational flexibility.

While its stated range is 290 to 300 km, its actual operational range exceeds 400 km. The Kh-69 has a launch weight of 710 kg, with a 310 kg warhead. Its guidance system combines GLONASS satellite navigation with an electro-optical seeker, and it travels at speeds between 700 and 1000 km/h.

In the conflict, the Kh-69 has been used in combined assaults, such as one involving 426 aerial weapons. Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted a Kh-69 with a cluster munition warhead on October 19, 2024. In another major attack on the night of March 24, 2024, Russia launched 6 missiles and 27 attack drones against 22 locations, including strikes on the Poltava community and a drone attack on Zaporizhzhia that killed one person and injured five others.
