Russian forces have adopted a new tactic in their war against Ukraine, now launching combined drone assaults both at night and during the day. Military analysts state this strategic shift aims to intensify pressure on the civilian population. According to Pavlo Palisa, while previous pressure was applied through strikes on energy and heating infrastructure, Russia now seeks to continue terrorizing civilians even after the heating season has ended. The Drone Warfare Landscape
In March 2026, for the first time since the full-scale invasion began, Ukraine surpassed the Russian Federation in the number of drones deployed. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian air defenses destroyed 7,347 Ukrainian drones that month, with an average of about 237 drones launched daily over Russian territory. Simultaneously, Russia used 6,462 drones and 138 missiles of various types against Ukraine in March. Ukraine's Defense Forces managed to neutralize or intercept 5,833 drones and 102 missiles, while enduring an average of approximately 208 drone attacks per day. The scale of this drone war is unprecedented in modern conflict.
Analysts also highlight a shift in Russia's target priorities. Pavlo Palisa indicates that the enemy will likely switch to attacking other critical facilities, including energy infrastructure, distributed generation sites, water supply systems, and transportation networks.
